About Hermitage Wines

Hermitage Wines is an importer and distributor of fine wines & spirits based in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou. Our mission is to distribute wines with a soul, character, wines that you will clearly remember. In this dynamic and fast reinventing industry, we are striving to stay ahead of the curve and to keep our customers' palates interested and challenged. In each case, we tirelessly look for wines in all price points that are not only of exceptional quality, but also crafted by very talented and bright people.

Our wines don’t win awards for their labels. It is the content that matters and always has mattered. We have been told by so many people - from restaurateurs to private customers to journalists and writers - that our list has a unique voice, very much the opinionated voice of our company.
Everything stems from our philosophy which is the passion to sell quality wines. There is a certain proselytising element, but we’re keen to encourage knowledge, stimulate enthusiasm and steer people towards an appreciation of what is good and we want to ensure that people’s experience of wine is full.

Our wines are never brands; they are not available in supermarkets; they are not mass-produced in wine factories. They are, instead, largely artisan products, because we believe that quality derives from attentive and caring farming methods. Great terroir and selection of vineyard location, harvesting by hand, manual selection, low yields, minimal chemical intervention and observation of the natural rhythms helps to create the quality of raw ingredients necessary to make great wine - at every price level. We highlight those vineyards where sustainable or organic viticulture is practised and we now have a fair number of biodynamic growers as well in our portfolio (although quality is always our paramount reason for listing a wine) We like to think that all the wines we list reflect the peculiarities and strengths of the region and that every wine justifies its place.

Our list is based on the quality of the producers and the wine they make. Without description, anecdote, a feel for the place or the personality the wine does not come alive, so we have chosen to season the list with extensive, graphic (and highly subjective) tasting notes, historical vignettes, cultural warmth, culinary background and multifarious digressions. When building a wine list we have a license for organised chaos; a list can - and should - reflect the way we drink and because we drink with food, or with friends, or whilst listening to music, or watching a sunset, or smelling the sea, and because we use both our senses and our memory and because drinking wine is itself primarily a reason for having fun, not a prim-lipped procedure, then truth has many shades and subtle grades.

So our wine list is different: it’s a tool, it’s a way in to understand the wines, it is intended to evoke and provoke and stimulate as it brings you close to the spirit of the wine itself. Most of all we want it to be a good read and we have built up a very devoted fan-base!
